The Great Race

When the Great Mystery created the earth and all living things upon it, the people and animals lived in peace. None, neither people nor animals, ate flesh. Now it happened in the course of many seasons that the buffalo began to think that they were the most powerful beings in the world. They came to believe that this gave them the right to kill and eat other animals, and people as well. Then the… Continue

True Indian Beliefs

The true Indian sets no price upon either his property or his labor. His generosity is limited only by the strength and ability. He regards it as an honor to be selected for a difficult or dangerous service, and would rather :"Let the person I serve express his thanks according to his own bringing up and his sense of… Continue

Inviting the Bears

An old man living in Alaska had lost all of his friends and family, and he felt sad to think that he was left alone. He began to wonder whether he should leave and start a new life in another village. But he worried, "If I paddle away to another village and the people there see that I am alone, they may think that I've run away from my own village because I was accused of some disgraceful thing."… Continue

It was first a traveling exhibit of archival photographs. It premiered at Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump, June 2 to October 31, 1999.

Photographs can speak. They can whisper or shout. They can lie. Many photographs, though, are silent. When individuals, events or other… Continue

The Drum

Thunder Cloud stood outside his father’s tipi and watched as the village came alive around him. It was a cold crisp morning and the snow that covered the land like a blanket lay deep underfoot. Many of the women of the Hunkpapa village were reluctant to leave the warmth and comfort of their lodges to go and collect firewood from the stockpile at the edge of their winter camp.

Wrapped in his buffalo robe young Thunder Cloud waited outside in the cold for he knew she would appear soon. He… Continue

Buffalo Woman, A Story of Magic

When the boy was old enough to be given a man's name, Snow Bird called him Braveness because of his courage as a hunter. Many of the girls in the Caddo village wanted to win Braveness as a husband, but he paid little attention to any of them.

One morning he started out for a day of hunting, and while he was walking along looking for wild game, he saw someone ahead of him sitting under a small elm tree. As he approached, he was surprised to find that the person was a young woman, and he… Continue

The Sine’s we should look for in the new changing in Mother earth's world and it effect's on us !

An Antarctic octopus that spews cold-resistant venom! A giant jellyfish that might have stung up to 100 people! A 40-ton whale that crushes yachts (well, at least one yacht, anyway)! The Web loves weird sea creatures. This past week, there was a lot to love.

Octopus fears no cold

They almost sound like some kind of a cartoon super villain. But not only are they real, they might have something to offer medicine. This past week, researchers discovered four new species… Continue

The totem and some meanings.

A totem can be the symbol of a tribe, clan, family or individual. Native American tradition provides that each individual is connected with nine different animals that will accompany each person through life, acting as guides. Different animal guides come in and out of our lives depending on the direction that we are headed and the tasks that need to be completed along our journey.

Native beliefs further explain that a totem animal is one that is with you for life, both in the… Continue

Native American Music and Musicians

As most of you know, I am part of an online 'radio' show that is aimed at aspiring musical talent. Our aim is to help these future stars direct their career .. help guide them in how to make the necessary decisions and better prepare themselves for a career in an incredibly competitive yet rewarding field.

One of the things I have noticed is the lack of integration of Native artists into what is 'affectionately' know as "the mainstream."

I have heard much of the…

Simple House Blessing

This is the house blessing ritual I have used for many years to bless a home before or shortly after moving in. The purpose of this ritual is many layered: to clear away any energies which may be lingering in the house from previous inhabitants, to protect the space against unwanted intrusions in the future, to encourage any spirit who might be there to leave and be on their way and to create a loving, harmonious space in which to live.

Everyone who will be living in the house should… Continue

Daytime Meditation Ritual of Hedgewitch

Some might tell you to find a sacred place but all places are sacred.

Some might tell you, you need to be in the forest, or by the sea, or on a mountain, but any place will do.

Some might tell you, you need tools, candles, athame, wand, a representation of The Lord and Lady, a bit of salt and maybe a bell or incense.

You need none of these things. For you have everything you need within yourself, the greatest tool… Continue

Symbols and Dream Interoperation

Even before early humankind learned to draw on the cave, wall symbols were an important part of the human experience. The Universal symbol of an open hand; an open hand or palms turned up was an obvious gesture displaying no weapon. Today and every day, we are bombarded with symbols. Symbols, tell us where to go and how to get there, warn us of danger and give us information at a glance.

Both Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud wrote about universal symbols, specifically for use in… Continue
