The Wrap -- Forget winning; Charlie Sheen is all about giving at the moment.
The "Anger Management" star announced Monday that he will donate $1 million to the United Service Organizations (USO), which will go toward an entertainment facility for injured troops in Bethesda, Md. The donation will mark the largest single contribution from an individual in the organization's history.
"The USO would like to thank Charlie Sheen for his very generous $1 million donation to our Operation Enduring Care Campaign and his interest in helping us lift the spirits of those who have endured so much to protect the freedoms we enjoy daily," Gen. John I. Pray Jr., executive vice president and joint chief of staff for the U.S. Air Force, said of the donation. "His support is greatly appreciated, especially from our wounded warriors and their families."
"It's an honor for me to be able to give back to these men and women of the military who have done so much for all of us,” Sheen said of the donation. “They put their lives on the line for us every day, and I'm just happy that my work on 'Anger Management' can bring a little bit of relief to the troops and their families."
The actor has pledged to donate 1 percent of the profits from his FX comedy "Anger Management" to the USO, with a guaranteed $1 million minimum. The first installment of $250,000 will be donated in a private ceremony next week.
Pentagon to set up database for military medals
By Rebecca Ruiz
The Pentagon said Tuesday that it would establish a database for military awards and medals so that claims of meritorious service could be verified in the future.
The decision was announced in a briefing by Pentagon Press Secretary George Little.
“We are exploring options to stand up a database of valor awards and medals,” Little said. “We haven't arrived at a final conclusion yet, but that process is ongoing and the goal is to stand up such a database.”
Last month, the Supreme Court struck down a federal law called the Stolen Valor Act which prohibits a person from falsely claiming that he has been awarded a military honor.
That law had been considered by its supporters to be a deterrent to false claims.
The Supreme Court case involved Xavier Alvarez, who claimed in 2007 that he was a retired Marine, had been “wounded many times,” and had been “awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor” in 1987. In fact, he never served in the United States armed forces.
Alvarez pleaded guilty to violating the Stolen Valor Act, but claimed that his false statements were protected by the First Amendment right of free speech.
The majority Supreme Court opinion found the law's limit on free speech unconstitutional.
The Pentagon database does not have a launch date and details about which medals and range of years to include still need to be settled, Little said.
Veterans of Foreign Wars, which has advocated for such a database and criticized the Supreme Court decision, applauded the announcement in a statement to msnbc.com.
“The cost is minimal compared to the verifiable proof it provides to honorable service members, veterans and all their families,” said national spokesman Joe Davis.
The Department of Defense had previously estimated the price of a database at $250,000, according to VFW, and declined to create one due to cost, privacy concerns and other factors.
Msnbc.com National Affairs Writer Tom Curry contributed to this report.
LadyHawk,
Many times we are not told what units of what branches of the military are on the front lines unless it is leaked, they want us to know, something really bad happens, or something really great happens. We have seen this many times in the past several decades. The Air Force is not exempt from the list of good and bad. Normally we hear about the bombers, the tankers (mid-air re-fuelers) and maybe the fighters (the fighters most people relate to are those that take off from the aircraft carriers), but there are other units of the Air Force that are busy supporting many these units as well as supplying support to other branches when needed. I know this all too well by spending 4 years on an Air Force base which was under three commands (SAC, MAC, and TAC) while my dad served his tour of duty through there. The reason I stated it that way was because my dad, though he was stationed there, was not always at that base. He did take supplies to our troops in Vietnam and other locations. Why do I mention this? Though my dad was not actually on the front line, his job was. The odd thing was when he and my step-mom went to see the the War Memorial in Washington D.C., his name was listed on it as kill in action. It took some time to get that corrected. He had plenty of proof that he wasn't KIA because he retired from the military. Peace and Blessings, Spiritwalker
