This crab inhabits sandy beaches on the Pacific coast of Central and South America. It takes its name from its largely nocturnal behaviour, although it is active by day as well. It feeds on detritus found in the sand, often making a ball. Numerous such balls are seen here. Filmed on Piqueros beach, Ecuador. Science Photo Library
