In nomadic families on the Tibetan Plateau, the women do essentially everything-collecting river water, milking the yak, making butter, cheese and yogurt from the milk, cooking, gathering yak dung for fuel; herding is the man's job but even in some cases they do that too while their husbands go to town to drink for days.

The name of the lake is derived from the idea that at least five distinct colors, which make it resemble a flower garden featuring five intense colors of flowers, can be seen at any time.
