There has been a question I have wrestled with for many years.. As I get older I get tired of relocating this creature that many times creates frustration during the growing season...
So now I pose this question to all of you
What is the benefits of leaving slugs to roam free in gardens??
Do they really have a purpose other than they are a living thing..
This morning I found a young one slithering up the metal pole to my hummingbird feeder..
If you know their purpose hope you share it with me
As I continue to try to respect ALL living things

You could try talking to Chief Walks - he runs the gardening group.
I think your love of slugs is a fine thing!
I like this by By Graham Needham,
There is no 'point' to slugs, any more than there's a point to lions, mosquitoes or humans. Organisms do not exist to serve a role as part of some higher purpose; they exist because they are able to. It's the property of life to expand and diversify to fill all available ecological niches. Slugs are capable of much wider colonisation than snails because they don't depend on a source of calcium to build their shells. They cause a lot of damage to garden plants and crops, but they also help to clear away rotting vegetation and are themselves a valuable source of food for toads, slow-worms, beetles and birds.
I think he's saying life does not need a purpose, that PURPOSE is a human invention, something we make up. No one else even thinks about it.
