Was the ceremony, to most of the Plains tribes. It was the only time in the year when the entire tribe gathers together. In the past it was held in June, when there was a plentiful supply of grass and buffalo meat. Modern supplies have allowed it to be moved to July and August.Sun Dance ceremonies were impressive ceremonies of tribal unity and renewal in which the Plains Indians fulfilled their personal vows of thanksgiving. The men dancers were pierced either in the chest and tied to the cottonwood tree or in the back to drag Buffalo skulls. The women dancers made flesh offerings.
Today, goals that are more psychological, such as seeking one's identity have developed. In addition, there are multiple Sun Dances on a reservation, as many as 8 one summer on the Pine Ridge Reservation. It is still the most intense moment of spirituality among the Plains Indians and evokes a sense of renewal and dedication. Men and women fast and dance for four days, the man being pierced in the women making flesh offerings.
