August 19 - Daily Feast
It is so easy to forget that every thought and word has a lasting effect. The result may not be noticed immediately, but time has a way of playing back the tape when we least need to hear it. Nervous tension and anger, however unintentional, may seem justified, but it never is. Too much stretch on a rubber band can bear on its weakest place and snap back to sting. Avoid putting too much pressure where it is dangerous. It is destructive and it hurts too much to take the chance. When the tape starts saying, "They meant it for harm," respond, "But I mean it for good."
~ This is a glad day for me.....because there is no more war between us and we meet in peace. ~
'A Cherokee Feast of Days, Volume II' by Joyce Sequichie Hifler
Elder's Meditation of the Day - August 19
"If we keep everything in balance, we are in harmony with ourselves and are at peace."
As within, as without, our present thought determines our future. If we want peace outside ourselves, we must first have peace inside ourselves. It's not what is going on but how we are looking at what is going on. We need to keep ourselves in balance. We must be careful to not get too hungry, angry, lonely or tired. We must know the times - time to work, time to rest, time to play, time to sleep, time to pray, time to lighten up, time to laugh, time to eat, time to exercise. There is a saying "The honor of one is the honor of all." This means when we work with all, we need to also work on one. We need to take care of ourselves. You cannot give away what you don't have.
Great Spirit, let me walk in balance today. Remove from me resentment, self pity and self seeking motives. Let me love myself so I can love my neighbors.
"THINK on THESE THINGS"
By Joyce Sequichie Hifler
There are so many things we must come to know. If there are obstacles, we have made them. And if there is unrest, it is because of a lack of holiness, of recognizing the truly important. If our appetites are too great, it is not that we crave food or drink, but something higher than that which we are experiencing.
Sometimes we fail to know the needs of others, but more often we can see their needs more clearly than we can our own. And we can help ourselves quickly by recognizing the truth of our own being.
We are spiritual beings and to operate in the strict physical and mental sense is likened to running a car with only gasoline. It cannot be done efficiently. It takes water, gasoline, and oil.
When we learn that it takes our physical, mental, and spiritual beings to make one person, then we are whole and have eliminated the inability to help ourselves. The outcome depends on you and me. And it is our duty to disqualify the thousand and one excuses that keep us from that duty.
