From tempers be it known that we are warm in the fields of battle and cool in the hours of debate.

PUSHMATAHA - CHOCTAW CHIEF

August 1 - Daily Feast

No wonder fear throws a wrench in our well-laid plans. We have been relying on dead gods, on lifeless theories and trying to fit our keys into corroded locks. This isn't living, it is throwing in with empty promises with nothing to back them up. Here we are, spiritual creations, trying to survive on mental and physical remedies, never considering that we have access to treasuries of ideas and wisdom and spiritual knowledge. These are the appointment makers that say, "go here, go there," and we can go in confidence. Spirit, come out of your web of supposed protection and begin to use the gifts. They are yours and they are beautiful beyond the reasoning human mind.

Elder's Meditation of the Day - August 1

"Everyone got to find the right path. You can't see it so it's hard to find. No one can show you. Each person got to find the path by himself."

Charlie Knight, UTE

There are certain times in our lives when a voice whispers to us. The voice doesn't always talk. Usually we hear it best when we are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Inside of every person is the knowledge that a Supreme Being exists. Sometimes a restlessness occurs and it makes me feel I need to be doing something or I need to be going somewhere or maybe I start wondering who am I? Often when this happens, I feel lost. Inside of everyone is the natural, built-in desire to be walking the Red Road, or to be seeking a relationship with the Creator. No one can force us to make this journey. We must make this journey because we want to. This journey is not on the outside. The path is inside of ourselves. It is inside that we must begin our search.

Oh Great Spirit, help me this day to look within myself. If trouble arises, let me realize that it's not what is going on but how I am looking at what's going on. Give me Your power this day to conduct myself according to Your way of life.

THINK on THESE THINGS
By Joyce Sequichie Hifler

There seems to be two important things to do in times of difficulty. One is to pray and the other is to keep our sense of humor. The first is essential to make the basic correction and the other is necessary to balance the human spirit while things work out.

Without a sense of humor, we tend to become too serious about the personal self. It becomes all too important, too self-righteous, and far too self-centered.

At the first signs of trouble, we may want to find someone wiser in whom to confide and ask questions. And their advice may be most helpful, but it is still our own responsibility to get off our backs and do it with dignity and self-respect that will not lower our standards not cause us embarrassment. And humor can help us do it.

There is humor in every situation if we can detach ourselves from the seriousness of it long enough to look for it. Abraham Lincoln knew the importance of his sense of humor and said, "With the fearful strain that is on me night and day, if I did not laugh I should die."

Knowledge is evidence of the past - but wisdom is using it to see the future. Knowing what to put in your bouquet of life takes wisdom. Drugs and alcohol and unrestrained behavior are the poison ivy among a field of life-giving herbs and beautiful flowers. These things are known to be toxic and death - but someone who had worldly knowledge knew they made a person have hallucinations. This need to look into hell is like calling home for comfort - it's not going to happen. Say it: "I am a person with the power to draw on unlimited wisdom - and I do it now by turning away from the dancing images of total foolishness and destruction."

Elder's Meditation of the Day - August 2

"When you get older and you are ready, your ancestors will show up to guide you."

Joe Coyhis, STOCKBRIDGE-MUNSEE

Many of us, when we are young, spend a portion of our lives in learning. Unfortunately, some of us spend this time learning the hard way. When we are young we sometimes think we know everything. Sometimes we do foolish things. As we get a little older, we realize we don't know anything. This is when we become teachable. There is a saying that goes, when the student is ready, the teacher appears. We usually aren't teachable unless we are ready. The ancestors are waiting and willing to help. When we are ready, many beautiful teachers start to come into our lives. Then we really start to grow and mature. We are ready for the spiritual lesson.

Creator, help me to become ready and teachable.

THINK on THESE THINGS
By Joyce Sequichie Hifler

If we could but read it, all human beings carry the marks of their character in the lines of their faces. The very expressions are etched there by habitual thought. The most beautiful features may be blank of expression, lacking depth of thought or understanding, while the plainest face may be lighted with a radiance only sincerity and inner beauty can produce.

Alexander Smith was a Scottish poet who wrote, "On your features the fine chisels of thought and emotion are eternally at work."

No pretense can hide the thoughts and feelings. The narrowed eyes of suspicion and discontent tattle, while serenity and devotion to others can reveal such beauty of spirit that the shape of the face is forgotten.

"In thy face I see the map of honor, truth, and loyalty," wrote Shakespeare, and it is safe to say that being able to see those things in another's face is an assurance that he also had such a face. To see only avarice and selfishness in every expression turned to us is to know that our own expressions lack something to be desired.

Life does not have to be full of ease to reflect beauty. Some of the most beautiful faces in history have not had eyes to see nor voice to move their lips, but have possessed peace and serenity that only faith could render.
