A New Year Legend-Jowiis and the Eagles

An Iroquois Legend

One day in the long time ago, Jowiis, an Indian lad, was hunting in the woods. It was cold and rainy weather, and the floods had wiped out all the trails. There was no Sun or Moon in the black Sky to guide him, and soon he lost his way. So he wandered for days, until hungry and faint, he fell upon a river-bank to die.

Then Donyondo, the Bald Eagle, swift of flight and keen of eye, saw, the lad lying on the bank. Though the bird was proud, his heart throbbed with…

Santa Claus in Native America

Santa Claus in Native America

Charlotte Kuchinsky

I have often been asked if Native Americans in general, or the Cherokee, in particular, recognize any of the same Christmas traditions celebrated by their Caucasian brothers. The answer to that questions is not easy to answer. It is both "yes" and "no."

I have already shared some of the traditions used in decorating a Christmas tree in my article entitled "Celebrate Your Native American Roots at Christmas Time." However, it is…

Thanksgiving: A Day of Celebration or Mourning for Native Americans?

By Nadra Kareem Nittle

Thanksgiving has become synonymous with family, food and football over the years. But this unassuming American holiday is not without controversy. Schools still teach children that Thanksgiving marks the day that Pilgrims met helpful Indians who gave them food, farming techniques and more to overcome the bitter New England cold. The children color cutouts of happy Pilgrims and happy Indians which ignore that contact between the two led to the decimation of millions…

Russell Means: A Look at His Journey Through Life

As news of his walking on spreads across Indian country, we’ve taken the time to look back at Russell Means’ storied life. He passed at 4:44 a.m. on October 22 at his home in Porcupine, South Dakota.

Means laughed in response to being called the most famous American Indian since Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse by the Los Angeles Times. Last year he told the…

What Is An Online Community?

I already understood the tiered dynamics of social sites but I found this article informative. At first glance you know what part you play in forming our social site. I have often wondered why so many are passive lurkers on sites but I understand sometimes it's just the need to be part of a larger community. I will never set rules that you have to post anything if you are content to just come and have a look around occasionally. We do have many passive lurkers here and I do see some of you…

Tribes Reach Deal to Purchase Black Hills Sacred Site

By ICTMN Staff September 4, 2012

“When I saw that Pe’ Sla was at risk, I thought somebody should do something and I said that to myself for about two weeks. Then I thought I should probably do something,” said Chase Iron Eyes, an attorney, at a press conference held Saturday to announce the tribes’ purchase of Pe’ Sla.

What he did was write an article August 1 for LastRealIndians.com and his efforts snowballed from there. The website raised more than $300,000 to help with the…

Remembering the 1904 ‘Savages’ Olympics’

By ICTMN Staff August 3, 2012

The Olympics weren’t always the celebration of world cultures you see today. Watching the hundreds of countries proudly waving their flags as they enter during the opening ceremonies.

At the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri the games hadn’t yet become the spectacle they are today. As Slate put it in a 2008 article, “Even in the U.S., the Olympics were seen less as an epochal sporting event than as yet another attraction at…

Canadian television viewers got an introduction to the story on Monday night via the documentary The Curse of the Axe, but a report from LiveScience.com tells more. Lead archaeologist Ron Williamson calls Mantle “the largest, most complex, cosmopolitan village of…

Soldier trades smokes for maimed dog in Afghanistan

MSN Friday, May 25

Army sergeant "Nick B" surely saw some heart-wrenching horrors during his stint in Afghanistan, but one of them he realized he had to change. When he came across a tied-up dog covered in mud, its ears and tail hacked off, Nick knew he needed to get the pup away from its owners. He traded his cigarettes for the dog, won his trust with beef jerky and worked out a deal with the Puppy Rescue Mission to transport his new pal, Bodhi, through Taliban-controlled areas and…

Bald eagles make comeback in the Windy City

By Kevin Tibbles

NBC News correspondent

CHICAGO -- Stan Wandersee has lived in the same house in St. Paul, Minn., for 50 years; and he’s never had any new neighbors quite as special as the one’s who’ve moved in this spring. High up a tree, across the street, is a family of bald eagles.

“This is a gift of nature that has been bestowed upon us,” he said.

There was a time in America when the bald eagle was on the endangered species list and facing extinction. The deadly…

See the Fantastic Vochol, a Huichol-Beaded Volkswagen

The old Volkswagen Beetle is iconic in Mexico, its little dome ubiquitous in thousands of vehicles zipping around major cities and chugging along country roads.

The Huichol Indians of Nayarit and Jalisco states are known for their intricate beadwork.

What better way to juxtapose ancient and modern than with … a beaded beetle? It is named the Vochol, a combination of the Beetle’s nickname, vocho, and the tribal name Huichol. Artists Francisco Bautista Carrillo and his daughter…

Lepidoptera in the Mythology of Native Americans

by Ron Cherry E.R.E.C.,

Because of the beauty, power of flight, and complete metamorphosis found in butterflies an moths, these insects frequently are found in Native American myths. In an early article, Grinnell called attention to the belief held by the Blackfeet that dreams are brought to us in sleep by a butterfly. Their sign for a butterfly was a design roughly…

Ask N NDN ~What Percentage Indian Do You Have to Be in Order to Be a Member of a Tribe?

By SONNY SKYHAWK

Tribal Nations are the only recognized arbiter of belonging to or being a member of a tribe. No other agency or arm of any government has that responsibility, other than the particular tribe to which a person claims to belong. Every tribe has its own membership criteria; some go on blood quantum, others on descent, but whatever the criteria it is the tribe’s enrollment office that has final say on whether a person may be a member. Anyone can claim Indian heritage, but…

The Invitation

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting in your heart's longing.

It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become…
