<p>DJ McClure~ I was taught that the Europeans were used to laying gifts down in front of royalty to show respect or in order to pay taxes, or simply because it was an expected practice for common people to do for a King or Queen. Our people were accustomed to the practice of the trade blanket. When our people were on a "friendly" basis with the Europeans and a trade blanket was laid down and items placed upon it to trade with the Euro's, they thought the Natives were giving gifts like THEY did to royalty. When the Euro's didnt place anything down to trade, the Natives assumed no trade was to take place and the Euro's thought the Natives were taking back the gifts...Indian givers.</p>
